The court heard how Sheila Jackson, 83, and her partner Eric Greener, 77, became victims of an arson attack aimed at their son, George Jackson. The couple's house on South John Street was set alight in July, resulting in their untimely deaths.
Kevin Weetman, Kylie Maynard, and Lee Owens stand accused of murder, while Owens has admitted to the manslaughter of the couple. The jury was informed that another man, Paul Smith, who died shortly after the blaze, was also involved in starting the fire.

A month prior to the fire, George Jackson had helped Maynard after she was robbed of drugs. She was selling cocaine from a tent near a local canal, and George Jackson had been a customer. On June 6th, George Jackson found Maynard in distress, claiming that three individuals had stolen her drugs. He took her to his mother's house for food and to clean up, and she stayed there for two days.
As a 'reward' for looking after Maynard, Weetman gave George Jackson some drugs worth several hundred pounds. When George Jackson picked up the drugs, he was offered a job as a drug dealer, which he declined. A few days later, he received another call asking if he wanted to deal drugs, and when he refused again, Weetman allegedly asked, "What about my dough?"
Power explained that Weetman's ego was at stake and he "resolved to take action to prevent a loss of 'face.'" He set in motion a plan to harm George Jackson by setting fire to his house in the middle of the night, but tragically, it was his parents who paid the ultimate price.
George Jackson was out when the fire was set on July 15th, but his mother and her partner perished in the blaze. It is alleged that Smith and Owens travelled from Liverpool to St Helens to carry out the attack, with Owens admitting to the manslaughter of the couple.
Owens claimed that he only intended for the fire to cause damage to the building, not to take lives. Weetman and Maynard, however, deny any involvement in the fire or the deaths.
