In the realm of healthcare, patient safety is paramount. The Leapfrog Group's latest report sheds light on the state of hospital safety in Idaho, revealing a mixed bag of results. While some hospitals excel, others have room for improvement, and a few have been excluded from the rankings altogether.
A Mixed Bag of Results
Idaho's hospitals received a range of grades, with 21% of the 11 hospitals evaluated earning an A grade. This is a slight decline from the previous year, when Idaho ranked 21st in the nation. The Leapfrog Group's director of communications, Lauren Bailey, attributes this drop to a decrease in hospitals achieving A grades.
Among the top performers are St. Luke's Boise Medical Center and St. Luke's Meridian Medical Center, both of which have consistently scored A grades since 2023. West Valley Medical Center in Caldwell also received an A grade, marking a significant improvement from its B grade in the previous year.
Room for Improvement
Despite the positive news, not all Idaho hospitals performed as well. Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Kootenai Health, St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center - Boise, St. Luke's Nampa Medical Center, Portneuf Medical Center, St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center - Nampa, St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, and St. Luke's Magic Valley Medical Center received B or C grades. These hospitals have clear pathways for improvement, according to Bailey, who emphasizes the importance of continuous improvement in patient safety.
Excluded from the Rankings
Three hospitals in Idaho were not assigned safety grades due to a recent federal court ruling. These facilities, including Idaho Falls Community Hospital, Madison Memorial Hospital, and Mountain View Hospital, chose not to participate in the 2024 or 2025 surveys. The Leapfrog Group is working on ways to rate these hospitals in the future.
