Karl Lagerfeld's Fall 2026 Collection: A Journey to the Mountains
The renowned fashion house Karl Lagerfeld presents its Fall 2026 collection, a nod to the elegance of alpine resorts and après-ski festivities. The collection, designed by Hun Kim, takes inspiration from the '80s, a time when formality and elegance reigned supreme. Kim's latest creation, a white shirt reminiscent of a tailcoat, is a bold statement piece, perfect for evening wear over glossy black trousers or a croc-textured miniskirt.
In search of a narrative for the collection, Kim drew from Lagerfeld's expertise in storytelling. He envisioned an escape to the mountains, a theme that resonates with the designer's past work. Kim reflects on the shift in fashion, stating, 'I think somehow we lost that kind of sensibility, of how people used to dress up. Everything became very casual.'
The collection showcases Lagerfeld's signature tailoring, white shirts, and little black dresses (LBDs), refreshed with intricate seaming and volume. Kim's attention to detail is evident in the choice of pagoda shoulders, rounded sleeves, and off-the-shoulder necklines, adding a modern twist to the classic pieces.
Transformable garments are a key feature, allowing for versatility in styling. A black sequin minidress can be worn with or without its black silk overskirt, revealing a glimpse of the legs. Similarly, a faux-fur bolero and a long vest in double-faced wool can be worn separately or together, creating a textural trench effect.
In recent years, Kim has moved away from cartoonish emblems and logos, opting for more subliminal designs. The KL coin, for instance, peeking out from penny loafers, is a subtle nod to the brand's heritage. This subtle approach is further emphasized in a forthcoming collaboration with American heritage brand G.H. Bass, controlled by the same parent company, G-III Apparel Group, as Karl Lagerfeld.
The Fall 2026 collection promises to be a testament to Lagerfeld's timeless style, offering a unique blend of elegance and modernity, while inviting wearers to embrace a more formal and chic approach to dressing.
