A shocking case has emerged from the UK, where a Nigerian student named Oluwabunmu Adeleiyi has received a prison sentence after deceiving the National Health Service (NHS) by impersonating a healthcare support worker with a counterfeit identity. This incident sheds light on serious issues regarding security and integrity within medical institutions, raising many eyebrows.
Living in Canton, Cardiff, Adeleiyi was in the UK on a student visa while she undertook employment at Neath Port Talbot Hospital and the Caswell Clinic situated in Bridgend. During a hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, it was revealed that she, along with two accomplices, exploited identical identification documents to defraud the NHS of approximately £16,000 each month, utilizing various employment agencies.
Adeleiyi admitted guilt to four counts of fraud by false representation. The court sentenced her to ten months in prison for each charge, with the sentences to run concurrently and suspended for two years. Additionally, she was mandated to complete 100 hours of community service without pay.
Two of the fraudulent activities were linked to her work at Neath Port Talbot Hospital, while the other two concerned her time at the Caswell Clinic, a secure mental health facility in Bridgend. The deception unraveled when Adeleiyi clocked out at the end of a night shift at the Caswell Clinic. A receptionist observed that a passport photo had been affixed to an ID card stored in a plastic wallet. When questioned, Adeleiyi did not comply with requests to present her shift documentation, prompting a more significant inquiry by the senior management team at Swansea Bay University Health Board (SBUHB), which subsequently declared a critical incident.
An internal investigation revealed that concerns had been raised about Adeleiyi's unusual behavior during shifts, such as isolating herself in a ward room and locking corridor doors that were meant to remain unlocked—actions that could significantly jeopardize safety during emergencies like fires or violent patient incidents.
Despite lacking any formal training in restraint methods, Adeleiyi had access to sensitive patient records and even made unauthorized entries in observation logs. Health officials indicated that the potential dangers introduced by her actions could have been catastrophic.
The court also learned that Adeleiyi had utilized the identity of a registered healthcare support worker who had departed the UK for Nigeria under dubious circumstances, carrying a forged passport.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Recorder Mark Powell KC emphasized the severity of her actions, stating, "You put the patients at risk… you put staff at risk," as reported by the BBC.
Following the proceedings, Neil Jones, the lead counter-fraud specialist for SBUHB, commented that the sentence issued today highlights the seriousness with which any fraudulent activity targeting the NHS will be treated, especially when it affects vulnerable patients or healthcare staff. He elaborated that Adeleiyi had procured fake nursing agency identification from a criminal organization operating overseas. Fortunately, he noted, she had limited interaction with patients, and a review by the health board confirmed that no harm came to any patients as a result of her actions.
