"He cherished every single moment," states the father of a Canadian soldier who tragically passed away in Latvia. Sebastian Halmagean, a dedicated gunner in the Canadian Armed Forces, lost his life during his service on Thursday.
According to his father, Alin Halmagean, Sebastian had a profound commitment to military life. "On Tuesday, he expressed how thrilled he was to be there, serving his country with pride," Alin shared with CTV News. He painted a picture of his son as a young man wholly devoted to public service, both within Canada and abroad.
"Sebastian took great pride in being a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. He truly loved every moment of this experience," Alin reflected. "Although I feel like I've lost everything, my son was engaged in something immensely significant for our entire nation."
Hailing from Hamilton, Ontario, 24-year-old Sebastian was actively participating in Operation REASSURANCE, according to an official announcement from the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). He had only been in the military for almost three years, making this his inaugural overseas deployment.
The Canadian Joint Operations Command Public Affairs Office confirmed in a statement to CTV News that Sebastian was on duty when he passed away. While details surrounding the cause of his death have not been disclosed, the CAF assured that there was "no indication this incident poses an increased threat to the safety and security of our deployed members."
The Latvian military police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances of his death, with assistance from the Canadian Forces Military Police.

In a heartwarming phone conversation with CTV News, Alin recounted that serving in the military had been a lifelong dream for his son. From an early age, Sebastian cultivated an impressive understanding of military history and weaponry, sharing intriguing facts with his father during conversations that Alin will deeply miss.
Just days prior to his passing, Alin had a 22-minute call with Sebastian, who was exuberant about his role. Alin reminisced about Sebastian's recent visit home for Christmas, during which he expressed his desire to encourage his friends to join the military alongside him.
