As a severe winter storm approaches Western North Carolina, residents are urged to prepare for potential power outages and road hazards. Governor Josh Stein and local leaders are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
The storm is expected to bring sleet, snow, and freezing rain, leading to hazardous conditions. Buncombe County officials are hosting a public briefing on January 23rd at 10 a.m. to provide updates and address concerns.
The briefing will feature a panel of local leaders and experts, including Board of Commissioners Chair Amanda Edwards, representatives from Buncombe County Health and Human Services, county administration, and emergency services. They will discuss storm readiness, response plans, and safety measures.
City of Asheville officials will also be present to share their preparations. Clay Chandler from the Asheville Water Resources Department will be available to answer questions about water services and infrastructure, ensuring residents are informed about potential impacts on their daily lives.
Governor Stein's office declared a state of emergency on January 22nd, emphasizing the need for preparedness. The primary concerns are power outages and road safety. North Carolina Department of Transportation officials have pre-treated roads, bridges, and overpasses with over 300,000 tons of brine to prevent ice buildup.
To stay informed, residents can access various resources. The National Weather Service provides forecasts, ReadyNC offers preparedness tips and information on power outages, and real-time road conditions are available on the NCDOT website. Additionally, Duke Energy's outage map and reporting system are valuable tools for tracking and reporting power disruptions.
As the storm approaches, it's crucial for residents to take proactive steps to ensure their safety and well-being. By staying informed and prepared, the community can minimize the impact of the winter storm and navigate the challenges it may bring.
